The ACT Women Lawyers’ Association is delighted to present our speaker panel event “How to Survive and Thrive In (and After!) the Law” at the ANU College of Law Moot Court, with esteemed panellists Elizabeth Lee MLA, Jennifer Darmody, and Jasmin Barker-Mitchell. Our Panel Event will be held on 26 July 2022, starting at 5:30pm.
It is often said that a university degree in the law, and embarking on a legal career, will equip lawyers with a diverse range of skills that can be used in wide variety of professional settings. A legal career also has a reputation of high pressure, fast pace, and the eternal struggle to maintain work/life balance. In addition to this, while graduating with a law degree can lead in many different directions, including private practice, community legal centres, legal policy, in-house practice, academia or further study, or something else entirely? This gives rise to the question that so many lawyers are often asking – how do I survive, and thrive, in the law? And how might my legal skills be used to help me survive and thrive after the law?
At our first in-person Panel event since 2020, we will hear from three incredible panellists who have not only thrived in the law, but who have pursued career paths that reflect the wide range of options that are available to women lawyers. We wanted to put together a panel event that explored the different options available for female lawyers in progressing their careers, and how to continue thriving against a burnout culture.
Jasmin Barker-Mitchell has worked across government, in house, and private practice, and is currently working at courts where she is an executive director and Senior Deputy Registrar at the ACT Supreme Court.
Jennifer Darmody has practised as a lawyer, is in academia and is also a professional cyclist. Growing up in Canberra, she studied law at the ANU before becoming a Tipstaff to the Honourable Justice Stevenson at the Supreme Court of NSW, after which she practised as a lawyer at King & Wood Mallesons. She is currently a lecturer in Equity at the University of Sydney Law School, and sessional academic at the ANU College of Law.
Elizabeth Lee MLA is the leader of the Canberra Liberals, and the Liberal Member for the Kurrajong electorate in the ACT. Prior to entering the ACT Legislative Assembly, Elizabeth practised as a lawyer and was also a lecturer at the Australian National University and the University of Canberra.
The WLA is delighted to have Prue Bindon, Barrister as our facilitator for the evening. We are proudly sponsored by the ANU College of Law and the Leo Cussen Centre for Law.
